PEO Marketing – Then and Now

There are hundreds of PEOs operating throughout the Unites States today. Like all businesses PEOs are looking for ways to expand their client base and grow their company. In the early days of the PEO industry the sales model for PEOs was to hire full time sales persons who would call on prospective clients and educate them on the value of their PEO’s services and attempt to get the prospect company to join their PEO. Although this sales model was expensive (base salaries for sales staffs, expense accounts, etc.) it was a financially viable sales model due to:

1) PEO Profit Margins high enough to cover the expensive sales costs to educate and sign an account.
2) Broad based coverage Workers Compensation insurance that allowed the PEO to take on almost any type of client account.

The situation has changed. PEO margins are much lower today than in the past causing tremendous pressure to reduce costs. Many PEOs have had to increase their deposits with insurance carriers in order to maintain their Workers’ Compensation insurance policy (without one a PEO is out of business). This increased collateralization has caused many PEOs to look for ways to cut costs…. specifically their cost of sales. In addition many PEO insurance policies have severely restricted the kinds of prospective account a PEO can take. This has caused the prospective client pool for any single PEO to be narrowed dramatically. Now rather than a PEO sales person having a broad target market, they must target a narrow band of business types who represent a risk type that is acceptable under their PEO’s insurance policy. Every PEO sales force has been affected. In addition, many PEOs have increased their underwriting requirements (information about the workers’ compensation insurance risk) of the prospective companies and now must get approval from their insurance carriers on a case-by-case basis. This has lengthened the sales cycle and further impaired the ability of direct PEO sales persons to get the account placed with their PEO.
